Volunteer Fire Department
The Montevallo Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) was established in 1927 by a group of dedicated men who wanted to serve their community and offer fire protection since the City had none. This tradition still holds true and carries on with the current volunteers of dedicated men and women who serve the city with their time, talents and sacrifice to serve the citizens of Montevallo. This dedication runs deep and flows through generations of families.
Montevallo has one of the best fire departments in the state of Alabama and it is 100% manned by volunteers. Firefighters undergo rigorous training when they join the department. MFRS consists of approximately 42 members. MFRS has earned the City of Montevallo a Class 3 ISO rating which is outstanding even in cities with paid fire departments. Maintaining this rating not only verifies the quality level of protection that Montevallo citizens receive, the rating also allows the home and business owner to receive lower rates on their home and business insurance coverage. The MFRS personnel are trained and capable of responding to any and all fires, hazardous material emergencies, high angle rescues, decontamination calls, extrication calls and confined space emergencies. MFRS is also a licensed Advanced Life Support EMS Dept. Currently EMS is provided by a team of approximately 10- Paramedics, 4 Intermediates, 4 Advanced and 8 EMTs.
The members of MFRS view their involvement with department to be one of the highest forms of community service. Numerous members have accumulated more than 20 years of service with MFRS. Throughout the years MFRS has produced 25 professional firefighters. MFRS also sponsors an explorer program that helps provide youth in the community the opportunity to serve the public. Countless former explorers have gone on to make highly successful careers in the fire service. With continued community support the traditions continue though current times.
