University of Montevallo
The University of Montevallo, founded in 1896, is Alabama's only public, liberal arts university. With an enrollment of approximately 3500 students, the University of Montevallo offers students with educational advantages generally available only in much more costly, private institutions of higher learning. Providing students with a quality, individualized, undergraduate experience is an integral aspect of the school's Mission and Goals.
The University of Montevallo is a recognized member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC). COPLAC is an alliance of public liberal arts colleges and universities. Members are dedicated to the education of undergraduates in the liberal arts tradition, to the creation of teaching and learning communities, and to the expansion of access to undergraduate liberal arts education. The University of Montevallo and many of its faculty, staff, and students also participate actively in the Higher Education Partnership. The HEP is a relatively new organization established to promote the well-being of higher education in Alabama. In addition to faculty, staff, and student members; the HEP welcomes the support of and offers membership to all individuals in Alabama who believe that higher education is valuable.
The University of Montevallo began as a women's school. For over one hundred years, American Association of University Women (AAUW) has promoted equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change. Membership is open to anyone with a degree from an accredited college or university. Student affiliate memberships for undergraduates are also available. In principle and practice AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership with no barriers to full participation on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, or disability. |

In the spring of 2006 the University of Montevallo’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction formed the Montevallo Connection. The impetus for this group was the Montevallo Educational Compact established in the 1980’s as a joint commitment among the local schools, the City of Montevallo, and the university. Building upon the foundation of the original compact, the purpose of the Montevallo Connection is to re-energize and further strengthen the partnership between the University of Montevallo faculty and the faculty in the Montevallo schools. The Organization id committed to identifying the needs at the university that can be met by Montevallo schools and the needs at Montevallo schools that can be met by the university. More specifically, the Montevallo Connection is dedicated to cultural, educational, and professional exchanges that will enhance the educational experiences of both students in the Montevallo public schools and those at the University of Montevallo. |
