Montevallo has one of the best fire departments in the state of Alabama and it is 100% manned by volunteers. Firefighters undergo rigorous training when they join the department. There are more than 50 members of the Montevallo Fire Department. MFD has earned the city of Montevallo a Class 3 ISO rating which is outstanding even in cities with paid fire departments. The members of the MFD view their involvement with department to be one of the highest forms of community service. Numerous members have accumulated more than 20 years of service with the MFD.
MFD recently added a new Quality 1000 Gallon Tanker/Pumper and a heavy duty rescue truck to its fleet.
The MFD also sponsors an Explorer Post which provides youths 15 years of age and older with an opportunity to join the Montevallo Secondary Fire Department. Many Montevallo Secondary members have "graduated" to full-time careers as firefighters in paid and volunteer departments throughout the area.
The Chief of the MFD is Bill Reid who has more than 30 years of service with the department. Bill has four sons who are members of the MFD and who are "graduates" of the MFD Secondary squad.
Montevallo Fire Department recently started a smoke detector program to provide free detectors to area residents.
