 Fire Department

The Montevallo Volunteer Fire Department (MFD) was first organized in 1927 with the first Fire Chief being elected in 1929.  The first fire truck was purchased in 1938 and is still owned by the City of Montevallo.  Affectionately referred to as “Lil’ Red” the antique fire vehicle is still used at events and parades.

Montevallo has one of the best fire departments in the state of Alabama and it is 100% manned by volunteers. Firefighters undergo rigorous training when they join the department.  There are approximately 42 members of the Montevallo Fire Department.   Ten of the participating volunteers are Firefighter II Certified.  MFD has earned the City of Montevallo a Class 3 ISO rating which is outstanding even in cities with paid fire departments.  Maintaining this rating not only verifies the quality level of protection that Montevallo citizens receive, the rating also allows the home and business owner to receive lower rates on their home and business insurance coverage.  The MFD is trained and capable of responding to any and all fires, hazardous material emergencies, high angle rescues, decontamination calls, extraction calls and confined space emergencies.  The members of the MFD view their involvement with department to be one of the highest forms of community service. Numerous members have accumulated more than 20 years of service with the MFD.  Throughout the years the MFD has produced 25 professional firefighters.  Currently the Fire Department is served by One Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 2 Captains, 4 Lieutenants and 2 Safety Officers.

In 1980 the MFD expanded to provide Emergency Medical Service (EMS) to the City of Montevallo.  Currently the EMS is provided by a team of 11 Paramedics, 4 Intermediates, 8  Basics and 6 First Responders.  The Montevallo EMS Team responds to approximately 750 calls per year.

The MFD has sponsored an Explorer Post Program since 1978 which provides youths 15 years of age and older with an opportunity to join the Montevallo Secondary Fire Department. Sixteen Montevallo Secondary members have "graduated" to full-time careers as firefighters in paid and volunteer departments throughout the area.  18 former Explorers now serve the MFD.

MFD fleet includes a 1938 Pumper Truck, a 1975 55’ Snorkel Truck, a 1989 Rescue Truck, a 1990 Pumper Truck, a 1999 Pumper Truck, a 1999 Rescue Truck, and a 2005 103’ Aerial Platform Truck.  The MFD operates out of 2 Fire Stations located in the City of Montevallo.

The Chief of the MFD is Bill Reid who has more than 30 years of service with the department. Bill has four sons who are members of the MFD and who are "graduates" of the MFD Secondary squad.
