Historic Preservation Commission
The goal of the Historic Preservation Commission is to protect and raise awareness of the valuable historic buildings within Montevallo's city limits.
The Community Remembrance Project Coalition is a group of Montevallo Citizens that emerged not long after the opening of the Equal Justice Initiative's (EJI) National Memorial for Peace and Justice in April of 2018. This group was powerfully moved by their experience at the memorial, and started moving toward getting an EJI historical marker erected in Montevallo to memorialize the two men, names unknown, who were lynched on Main Street on August 31, 1889. On June 8, 2020, a historical marker recognizing these two men was put in place on Main Street across from City Hall. The Community Remembrance Project Coalition continues to work in Montevallo to educate the community about the history and terrors of racial injustice in our area.
